For a long time it’s been illegal to dump food waste anywhere but a permitted facility or your own backyard. But soon, community gardens may be exempt from this waste management law!

Composting is one of the simplest ways to reduce household waste and create a nutrient-rich fertilizer for your garden. But did you know that you can take composting to the next level with vermicomposting?

An ancient practice, composting is no longer common, and only a handful of companies are taking the lead in solving the enormous food waste problem. Why is this so? My investigations show that the problem is mostly due to regulatory and legislative issues, as well as some obstacles that can be overcome with activism. Recently, some signs of progress toward modernizing and improving our waste management system in New Jersey have begun to emerge.

In 2024, we knew we needed to get out into the community and educate. We are proud to have put on over 10 programs, (and counting!).
